The kind of day I'm having -- it's apparently still better than being inside the brain of Billy Joel

I was going to pick a Billy Joel tune to go along with the shot, considering that's the sheet music we have out there. But then I did a quick review of his oeuvre and realized that any song that seems remotely related to the feeling of this shot pretty much makes a person want to lock herself in a closet and never speak to another human being again. REALLY!

Poor guy. (Well, actually, he's rich.) But have you listened to his down-tempo stuff? REALLY LISTENED? No thanks, dude. I just have the flu or something. Not utter disillusionment with human relations dressed up with a tiny bow.

  • Wow. Hatin' on Billy Joel. This is quite the cold you have indeed.

  • He's quite the tortured soul. But then I'd have issues if I'd stopped growing in boyhood.

  • What about "She's Always a Woman to ME" ? You know, except for that whole "carelessly cut you and laugh whie you're bleedin'" part :)

  • Oh Jill,

Billy Joel and the River of Dreams? I've been reading, but I've been quiet. (And apparently trying to post as Neil Diamond) :)

  • Still sick? Wow, you must have some kind of mutant virus or something. Need some chicken noodle soup?

  • Are you kidding? You need to put in some Leo Sayer. "You make me feel like dancing *raaaaalph* gonna dance the night away!"

Yeah, I know, not a good way to come back to your blog.

  • Thanks, CB!

-J, I'm not hatin' on him. I mean it with affection. I've contemplated his music more than I care to admit, and some of it is fairly transparent, but I do have an appreciation. Plus, I grew up on the Billy Joel, so I'm a bit sentimental for him. But truthfully, there's just a LOT of downers in there--calm, sweet, a lot of lovely piano accompaniment, but it doesn't mean it's not a downer in his disillusionment. Many true human observations... but...

ACK, yes, perhaps the fact that he's vertically challenged contributed to his sagas of bittersweet torture with womankind.

GSR, masochism, anyone? Mr. Joel is variously bi-polar ("Summer, Highland Falls"), masochistic ("She's Always a Woman"), obsessive ("All for Leyna"), self-sabotaging ("You May Be Right")... I could go on. I would go on, but I've got to finish up some work before close of business today. This analysis WILL continue.

Lou P, that's a fun one, but one of his more transparent, no? I guess that's what makes it entertaining.

M.A. (or should I respond to Neil Diamond?) I thought quoting "River of Dreams" on this photo would be a bit obvious. But I was glad to see that he had that "journey to the center of the spiritual self" type lyrical experience as he got older. Didn't seem to help him that much, though... Stranger things occurred after that album...

Karl, I don't think it's that mutanty. I've only been sick since early Saturday morning, and it seems to be clearing itself. Thanks for the offer. I did have some chicken soup, and it was quite good.

If I could dance right now, Grunt, I would. But mostly I'm going to sit here, eat soup, drink tea, and get some work done while I can keep my eyes open. Welcome back. I've missed you.

  • While his down-tempo stuff can be really down, lyrically it is still amazing, especially 'And So It Goes'... for whatever reason, that one always struck me (and it was hidden so well, the last track on 'Storm Front').
