Pieces

You have pieces of me.
Objects that I have held, touched. Run my fingers over.
I imagine them--postcards and letters, envelopes and paperclips:
do they look different in your hands than they did in mine?

Are they worn now, edges smoothed, corners bent, your fingers rubbing and folding and creasing as your mind raced?

Or are the pages pristine, pressed carefully between your techno-gadgets, for fear you might destroy the fragile fibers, and by some symbolic voo-doo, all that they delivered?

You are tactile--the only thing you care not for in your hands, a pen.
Your words scrawled: a mere practicality.
My words delivered: an object for your hands alone. An amulet.

Loved inkless or preserved priceless?

  • Whoever this is has something precious of yours, indeed. Are they appreciating it?

  • I'd like to think it's been carefully preserved as not to lose your touch.

  • Grunt, my things have always been appreciated properly. It's just that sometimes I take the time to imagine their state of happiness in their new home.

That's most likely, CB, but I'd be okay with the other option as well.

  • "You are tactile--the only thing you care not for in your hands, a pen."

This made me pick up a pen just to have something in my hands. Your words inspire me to tactility (is that a word?).

  • Ah, don't worry, we can make words up. I think that's what Brando's trying to do today as well. Let's just declare it MAKE A WORD UP IN THE COMMENTS DAY! If by make a word up in the comments day, I mean... hmmm.... make a word up. In the comments. What's that called again?

By Blogger Jill, At Thu May 04, 08:35:00 AM 2006

  • EXACTLY. I care not for a pen in my hands, and by pen i mean notebook computer. And that's why I didn't respond to your email, because my words are a mere practicality, and by mere practicality i mean i passed out 2 seconds after posting to my blog.

  • /wipes brow

    Whew! I'm relieved!

If by relieved, I mean "going to eat breakfast."

  • Good last question. For some reason, I think that being "Loved inkless" is the most compelling thing I've heard of in days. I can't explain why, of course.

By Blogger Momentary Academic, At Thu May 04, 09:16:00 AM 2006

  • As much as I may visually prefer the "preserved priceless" option, there is just something to be said for an item that is "loved inkless."

What does the ink really matter? By the time it is truly inkless, the words will already be committed to memory to be replayed over and over and over again.

And as your eyes glance over the worn and wordless parchment, your mind and heart will still see the exact position where the letters once stood out as they burned their image into your memory.

  • Thanks, M.A.. I am rather fond of that phrase myself, though I try not to get too attached to my own words.

I agree, Kevin. And that's beautiful, the way you've expressed it.

  • You have a new look here. I like.

  • I love that idea, thinking about who touches the things we have or once had. interesting stuff...

By Blogger Cheryl, At Thu May 04, 02:54:00 PM 2006

  • I liked this post, and by liked I mean I enjoyed it.

No wait. I did that wrong, and by wrong I mean not wrong.

No, that's not really right either. Hmmm...

    Hello, Jill.

  • You know, thinking about who has touched your things could be slightly unsettling too... stalkerish even.
Show and tell's gotten so much more complicated since kindergarten.

  • Beautiful. Strange that I read this today, just now. I just got an old letter in the mail and I felt like I was reading your words about it. We were thinking alike today.

By Blogger Megan, At Thu May 04, 05:24:00 PM 2006

  • I have two sets, depending on the hand that wrote the lines...

By Blogger Faltenin, At Thu May 04, 05:50:00 PM 2006

  • Thank you, Thomas.

It is interesting to ponder, isn't it, Cheryl?

Hello, Scott! And by Scott, I mean you.

Well, yes, Matt, if you look at it that way, it could get a bit weird.

Megan, you got an old letter in the mail? Hmmm... interesting.

And what makes the difference, Faltenin?

By Blogger Jill, At Fri May 05, 12:14:00 AM 2006

  • That was beautiful, Jill.

By Blogger Jenna Howard, At Fri May 05, 04:44:00 PM 2006

  • Thank you very much, Jenna. And thanks for the visit.

  • That's some deep stuff there and I loved it! You know how to make a guy really think, that is for sure.

In my hands, sentimental keepsakes are gently loved/worn slightly, but forever preserved in a secret box...and kept safely in my heart.

By Blogger DIAMONDKT, At Sun May 07, 09:52:00 PM 2006

  • I know how to make a guy really think? :) I shall take that as the highest compliment!

And I think "gently loved" is a great phrase for the occasion.

By Blogger Cheetarah1980, At Wed May 10, 12:47:00 PM 2006

  • thanks :)

  • Loved inkless seems so pure and genuine and meaningful. But me? If I can't read it over and over and over, then my memomry gradually fades to grey. I need ink to remember. Or phone calls.

'Glad I found this old post. Thanks, Jill.
