Freakish, or miraculous, or something.

I know where you want to be right now. And I know how it feels.

I have often wanted to be where I am not. I am occasionally not where I want to be.

Sometimes, you want things so fiercely, you think you might bleed for wanting. Don't stop. When you stop wanting, you stop achieving. Hold the feeling close, as evidence of your extraordinary humanity.

Then, let it go.

Because where you are is just as important as where you are headed.

And wherever you are is special because you are there.

  • "When you stop wanting, you stop achieving." - That is the reason why contentment equals giving up.

  • That's what graduation cards should say, Jill. Just a thought.

  • Know what Jill? I really needed that today. Thanks for the reminder. And as I've mentioned before - I'm still "lurking" on a daily basis! ;)

  • ...Because where you are is just as important as where you are headed...

Hmmm... it's a good theory, but I'm at Starbucks. So much for that theory.

    Hello, Jill.

  • Can you convince my boss that the office is special because I'm here? I don't think it would work coming from me.

I do like this, though. Something to keep in mind.

  • Ah Jill. EXACTLY what I needed today. You rock, especially in the reading my mind department....

By Blogger Amber, At Mon May 08, 10:41:00 AM 2006

  • Thank you, Egan. I hope it motivates you as well.

Yes, CB, which is why we ought to be wary of contentment.

M.A.: I've always wanted to start my own line of greeting cards! For real.

Lurk to your heart's content, Dasi. I am happy to have you here. Glad I could help.

You forgot the corollary, Scott. Starbucks is special because you are there. Hello, Scott.

    Absolutely, Kevin. Lemme at him.

YAY! And Amber rocks, too. Now go get 'em, tigress!

  • I needed those exact words. How did you know? That was definitely freakish, miraculous and something.
    Thanks.
    ;)

  • Ah Jill, always finding a way to get into my head (a dangerous place sometimes)and saying exactly the right thing. I'm actually going to print this one and keep it with me. Because you don't know how badly I needed a big fucking reminder. So thanks!

  • I need to tell job about this post. One moment...

Really, who was this for anyone specific? Thanks for engaging all of us!

  • I have a friend who has said many times, "You're not who you think you are," which—on some levels—is so very true.

Your post today makes me wonder if I'm not where I think I am. I have trouble with that one, so I've decided I'm staying put until where I think I am eventually coincides with where I really am.

    Hi.

  • Okay is it my mood or is this just a little to sugar coated. :)

  • Elle, I am exercising my psychic gifts. Or something.

I much enjoy being inside your head, Kendra. It feels a lot like home.

Janet: When I write, I usually imagine my audience, and what I write is generally directed at someone specifically. But at the same time I also hope that I can make the specific universal so that anyone could relate to it. So yes, I did have a person in mind, but yes, I am thrilled to have touched other readers as well. The more, the merrier.

Hi Peefers. I'm with you. I'm not sure if I am who I think I am, or if I am where I think I am, so I'm just going to be until something coincides with something else. Great. Glad we got that covered.

Yes, Rocket Surgeon, but the soul should also get some other stuff done in the interim.

Well Croaker, I'm not one to defend what I write, so I shall leave that up to you to decide. But, do know that I sincerely mean each word, and that if I could think of a better way to express it, I would probably avoid the word "special". "Special" is not to my liking, but that's the state this draft is in right now and I wanted to share it today.

  • Jill, you couldn't have known, but this was something I needed to hear today. Thank you. It's a wonderful post.

  • Sometimes, all I need is the air that I breath...

    (Not very often; but SOMETIMES!)

By Blogger Zen Wizard, At Mon May 08, 03:01:00 PM 2006

  • Amen! where you are is just as important as where you are headed is one great piece of American literature right there. If you are continually striving for more, you miss out on what you have. I think you just have to find a good balance of wanting more and enjoying what you have. Easier said than done.

  • You wrote that about me, didn't you? I always knew you loved me.

By Blogger Megan, At Mon May 08, 05:57:00 PM 2006

  • And yes, the new picture is swell.

By Blogger Egan, At Mon May 08, 07:02:00 PM 2006

  • Glad to help, Cheryl.

Ah yes, "sometimes" being the key word, ZenWizard

Very wise, young Lil Bitty... and regards to your dad; I have a fondness for anyone with celestial-inspired body art.

    I do, Megan!

My new picture, Egan? Because I could have sworn you had a different avatar up there as well...

  • You are without equal in the blogosphere. Nobody writes like you Jill. You're not pretentious or self absorbed and you write from the heart, not to showcase your talents. Love your work. :)

By Blogger Steph, At Mon May 08, 11:43:00 PM 2006

  • Wow! Thank you so much, Steph.

By Blogger kapgar, At Fri May 12, 09:28:00 AM 2006

  • This may be one of my all-time favorite Jill Writes posts...ever!

By Blogger DIAMONDKT, At Sun May 14, 11:46:00 PM 2006

  • No problem. I'll take on your she-boss, Kevin.

Thanks, Diamondkt. I hope because it gave you a bit of comfort.
