This is my brain on Sudoku.

Any questions?

This is puzzle #77 (level: hard--I only do this sort of insanity on hard or above) taken from the following book (yes, this citation is in MLA format):

Griffiths-Jones, Sam. The Sudoku Book:An Introduction to Sudoku with 101 Puzzles. San Franscisco: Spinner Books, 2005.

  • Minus the X's, that's exactly what I do. I write in all the possibilities in squares I cannot readily guess in a 3x3 pattern just like that. I'm sure others do, too, but you're the first one I've actually seen do it.

  • Next step is to solve it Jedi fashion.

Look at it for 30 seconds to memorize the positions, close your eyes, and fill in...

  • at tequilacon05, jenny and jill bought me a sudoku book and i don't remember much about the next month of my life other than RANDOM NUMBER CREATION.

it seriously took over my life. i was glad to be rid of it.

    SEE YOU SATURDAY!

  • falteni, "Jedi fashion"?... sounds more like "Harakiri fashion"! ;-)

    What about Kakuros?

By Blogger Magnetic Mary, At Wed Apr 19, 06:54:00 PM 2006

  • Sorry, something went wrong with the link... copy and paste is so 20th century but it'll have to do: http://www.divingforbananas.com/kakuro/

By Blogger Magnetic Mary, At Wed Apr 19, 06:59:00 PM 2006

  • AHHHHHHH!!! What are you doing!!! Ha ha... I like to do them in pen but then again, I am too afraid of the "hard" category! ;)

  • I play sudoku online. Oh evil, mind-befuddling, addictive horrible wonderful sudoku...

By Blogger Amber, At Wed Apr 19, 08:14:00 PM 2006

  • I'm sorry. Am I the only one who finds this hot? A woman who writes well and loves puzzles? You're killing me.

I seriously almost included "Love of puzzles" in my recently posted 'personal ad.' My fiance' does at least two of these a day.

  • Hello internets! Sorry I've been away from the computer today. I'm off from teaching this week, so I thought I'd get in some outside time.

So is that a good "yowza" or a bad one, Cube?

But Kevin, don't you ever X them out when you've eliminated them? Or do you erase?

Faltenin, these are not the droids you're looking for.

    Silly Sass!

So is coffee. What of it, Thomas?

I rather guessed that you love sudoku, Free Sudoku.

See you Saturday, Brando. Now that I know your kryptonite, I just might bring some along.

Magnetic Mary, I will have to try that out. I'll get back to you after I've stayed up all night playing.

Do you really want me to explain, Kilax? ;)

A very apt description, oh WordNerd.

You know, Grad School Reject, I bet if I tried I could write some really seductive puzzle-solving descriptions... I'm just sayin'.

  • I used to do the X thing when I started Sudoku...but I mostly just made a mess of the puzzle. Now I do this thing where I draw imaginary lines based on the numbers.

It makes the time fly at one of my jobs. :)

  • I solve Sudoku puzzles by glancing at them once and then causing all the correct numbers to appear with my mind.

The hardest ones are the ones that are completely blank. Those are also the easiest ones.

The hardest part about sudoku is finding a pencil. For most people, I mean. I use a Sharpie. A mind Sharpie.

    Hello, Jill.

By Blogger scott, At Wed Apr 19, 10:24:00 PM 2006

  • Never played it, you'll have to teach me.

By Blogger Mikey, At Thu Apr 20, 12:21:00 AM 2006

  • So is mine. Every Sunday, I try in vain to do the puzzle next to the New York Times Crossword (which I also try, in vain, to finish) and the newspaper ends up looking like the tortured magazines in "A Beautiful Mind."

You aren't giving up though, are you?

  • This is my brain on Sudoku.

By Anonymous anaglyph, At Thu Apr 20, 04:00:00 AM 2006

  • Below is a link to "Billions of Free Sudoku" I can not verify that claim, I have only played a few dozen. The "EVIL" level is by far the most fun/torturous. Not that torture is in any way fun. . . you know what I mean. I did this one last night and it was tough. Took longer than normal to finish it. http://www.websudoku.com/?select=1&level=4

  • I have an affinity for people who can do these things.

I suck at math. Or anything remotely relevant to math.

I can work the NYT Sunday crosswords in record time, and do so with frequency. In ink.

But I suck at math. Totally.

By Anonymous Jennifer, At Thu Apr 20, 09:57:00 AM 2006

  • Looks like the way I play it. I like the online ones--less erasing, less writer's cramp.

By Blogger Cheryl, At Thu Apr 20, 12:23:00 PM 2006

  • BHB--uh, you draw imaginary lines? How exactly does that help?

Another inimitable comment from the wonderama that is Scott. Hey Scott, did you see in Peefer's comments that I thought I was you? It was fun.

Do you really want a lesson, Mikey?

Oh, there's no quitting here, Janet. Look closely: this one is actually finished.

I highly doubt that, Anaglyph. I just know you're a total puzzle geek.

All right! More free puzzles! Thanks, Lil Bitty.

Oh Jennifer, this isn't numerical math. This is logic. The numbers are just there as a symbolic system.

I have not yet played online, Cheryl. I'm not sure if I'm going to like it. I have to make lots of marks (as you can see) and doodle when I'm thinking.

By Blogger Jill, At Thu Apr 20, 04:40:00 PM 2006

  • Looking at this just makes me nervous. Switching blogs now. ..

By Blogger Popeye, At Thu Apr 20, 08:32:00 PM 2006

  • I did see that. I think you do me well, Jill.

Wait, that sounded wrong. What I meant was... uh...

    Hello again.

By Blogger scott, At Thu Apr 20, 10:54:00 PM 2006

  • I've heard a lot about these puzzles, never tried them. Looks quite intimidating.

By Blogger Karl, At Thu Apr 20, 11:21:00 PM 2006

  • dear god - the xxxs are meticulous and therefore way too distracting to my brain.

i do love a good sudoku though. so much in fact that I started trying to figure this one out while it was sitting on my screen.

By Blogger suze, At Fri Apr 21, 01:43:00 PM 2006

  • Logic = math = logic.

    It's all Greek to me.

But I have great admiration for those who get it.

By Anonymous Jennifer, At Sat Apr 22, 01:47:00 PM 2006

  • Sorry. Took me a while to re-comment. I erase. I'm anal like that. The first time in years I've ever used pencil.
